Who makes the parts in your car?

Specialist companies make many automotive components. Knowing their brands helps you research alternatives; verified part numbers, fitment and traceable sourcing help you choose.

Eight illustrated steps toward a better purchase

Spanish illustration: vehicle brand, component manufacturer and correct part number
The vehicle brand and the component manufacturer are different facts. Part number and fitment decide whether an alternative is suitable.
Spanish illustration: Genuine, OE supplier and aftermarket definitions
Genuine describes vehicle-brand distribution; an OE supplier supplies original equipment; aftermarket describes the replacement market.
Spanish illustration: MANN-FILTER, MAHLE/KNECHT and Hengst filter families
These brands are starting points for filter research. The illustrations do not represent a complete kit for one vehicle.
Spanish illustration: LEMFÖRDER, SACHS and TRW specialties within ZF
These are examples of ZF brand ranges. Belonging to the same group does not make different products the same part.
Spanish illustration: INA, FAG and LuK specialties within Schaeffler
INA, FAG and LuK cover different specialties. Check the exact part number and application notes.
Spanish illustration: Bosch, Pierburg, Elring and Corteco product families
Motorservice is the aftermarket channel cited for Pierburg. A commercial group is not necessarily the manufacturer of every product it sells.
Spanish illustration: BMW 11 42 7 953 129 catalogue relationship with MANN-FILTER HU 816 x
MANN-FILTER lists the BMW number against HU 816 x. Confirm VIN, engine, supersessions and installed configuration; fitment is not universal.
Spanish illustration: six checks before buying replacement parts
Compare the contents and the total delivered cost. The illustrated VIN does not identify the reader’s vehicle.

Three labels worth understanding

Genuine
A replacement part sold under the vehicle manufacturer’s brand and part number. An outside supplier may have manufactured it.
OE supplier
A company that supplies original-equipment components. That role does not certify its entire aftermarket range as identical to every Genuine part.
Aftermarket
The replacement-parts market, including products from OE suppliers and other manufacturers. The term alone does not establish quality or fitment.

Retail listings use OEM ambiguously. Ask for the declared manufacturer, exact part number and documented application.

Manufacturers, groups and brands: where to start

These are product families documented by the companies. This is not a list of who makes every BMW component or a certification that different brands are equivalent.

A documented example: the part number comes first

The official MANN-FILTER catalogue lists BMW 11 42 7 953 129 (11427953129) among the OE numbers associated with oil filter HU 816 x. [1 · MANN-FILTER catalogue]

This documents a catalogue relationship for specified applications. It does not identify who made every filter in a BMW box, prove that two batches are physically identical or establish fitment for every BMW. Confirm the current vehicle part number, supersessions and application notes.

Six checks before buying

  1. Identify the vehicle: VIN, engine, transmission, equipment and production date when relevant.
  2. Obtain the correct part number: Check the vehicle manufacturer’s current number and documented supersessions.
  3. Confirm the alternative: Find its part number in the brand’s official catalogue and check restrictions, notes and the required specification.
  4. Compare the contents: A loose part and a complete kit are different purchases. Check seals, bolts and required accessories.
  5. Verify the source: Use a traceable seller, invoice, warranty and return terms. Establish whether the product is new or remanufactured.
  6. Calculate the total cost: Include the part, shipping, import charges and taxes. Check that the saving still exists at your destination.

When is the saving real?

When the alternative has confirmed fitment and specification, traceable sourcing and a favorable total cost for the customer. There is no universal saving percentage. Promotions, freight and warranty terms can change the result.

Appearance, a matching connector or a picture of the box cannot replace catalogue verification. If fitment cannot be confirmed, the purchase is still unresolved. Before approving a quote, ask for both part numbers, the declared manufacturer and the contents in writing.

Saving money starts with buying the correct part the first time.
