Spanish illustration: Genuine versus manufacturer packaging; verify specification, application and authenticity
Before saving, verify specification, application and authenticity. These boxes are illustrations, not authenticated product photographs.
Spanish illustration: BMW 12120040551 versus NGK 94201; illustrative prices corrected in the article
This graphic retains US$14.31 for NGK. The checked listing now shows US$14.32; use the article table for verified calculations.
Spanish illustration: Toyota 90919-01275 versus DENSO SC16HR11; see the verified-price correction
The graphic's Toyota US$16.62 and DENSO US$10.80 figures could not be corroborated in this review. They are not presented as verified prices; use the current table and sources.
Spanish illustration: branding, distribution, traceability, warranty, logistics and taxes influence pricing
Branding, distribution, traceability, warranty, logistics and taxes can affect price. More expensive does not always mean better; cheaper does not prove equivalence.
Spanish checklist: reference, VIN, specification, dimensions, authenticity and installation; illustrated torque is not an instruction
Check part number, VIN application, specification, dimensions, authenticity and installation. The illustrated “25 N·m” is not a recommended torque. Obtain the engine- and part-specific procedure.
Spanish conclusion: choosing manufacturer or Genuine packaging without sacrificing specification
Manufacturer packaging may be suitable with confirmed application and authentic supply. Choose Genuine when OEM revision, documentation or official-channel traceability requires it. Never sacrifice specification.

Retail sample: vehicle-brand packaging versus spark-plug manufacturer packaging

BMW vs. NGK: calculated difference of US$11.87 each (45.3% of the Genuine BMW price), US$47.48 for four or US$71.22 for six. Toyota vs. DENSO: US$4.24 each (28.8% of the Genuine Toyota price), US$16.96 for four. These compare different retailers and do not prove that packaging accounts for the entire difference.

The sales channel matters: Turner lists NGK 94201 at US$20.99. Compared with Genuine BMW at that same retailer, the difference is US$5.20 each (19.9%). Compare total cost and seller terms. [Turner NGK]

Genuine BMW vs. NGK: catalog equivalence is not proof of physical identity

Retail listings for NGK 94201 / SILZKGR8B8S include BMW 12120040551 as an interchange number. This is a retailer-published cross-reference; it does not by itself prove that a particular Genuine BMW plug and an NGK plug have identical construction, the same production batch or every manufacturing revision in common. [RockAuto] [Turner NGK]

Confirm the current BMW part number by VIN, then verify the application in the spark-plug manufacturer's current catalog. Do not extend this example to every BMW engine. Part supersessions, engine revisions or modified calibrations may require another specification.

Genuine Toyota vs. DENSO: match the exact part number

DENSO's official catalog associates Toyota 90919-01275 with SC16HR11 for specified applications. The dealer's Genuine Toyota listing also identifies SC16HR11. This supports the listed application relationship, not universal compatibility across Toyota vehicles. [DENSO catalog] [Toyota]

Source correction: the initial package linked to Toyota 90919-01253 at Nengun, while the illustration uses 90919-01275. That link is not used to substantiate the price or a universal substitution between those numbers. Confirm supersessions, engine, year, market and build date by VIN.

OEM, Genuine, OE Supplier and Aftermarket: what the terms mean

OEM — Original Equipment Manufacturer
The maker of original equipment. Retail advertisements use the term loosely; ask for the actual manufacturer, part number and application. The label alone does not certify compatibility or origin.
Genuine — vehicle-brand replacement part
A part marketed under the vehicle manufacturer's brand and part number. An outside supplier may manufacture the component.
OE Supplier — original-equipment supplier
A company supplying components for original vehicle production. Being an OE supplier does not make every product in its range identical to every Genuine replacement.
Aftermarket — replacement market
Parts sold for maintenance and repair outside vehicle-brand packaging. This includes OE suppliers and other manufacturers; check the specific product line and part number.

NGK distinguishes its OE Iridium / Laser and Iridium IX families. The same brand or the word “iridium” on two boxes does not automatically identify the same plug. [NGK]

Why can the vehicle-brand box cost more?

Branding, distribution, availability, logistics, taxes, margins, traceability and warranty terms can influence the price. A retail price cannot isolate the cardboard's contribution. Compare the correct reference, documentation and seller support.

Catalog equivalence: a documented relationship for a defined application. Physical identity: verified matching construction, materials, geometry, revision and specification. A cross-reference alone does not establish all those attributes.

Risks of incorrect or counterfeit spark plugs

An authentic plug in the wrong application can cause operating problems or damage. DENSO warns that counterfeit plugs may cause misfires, overheating and damage to ignition components or the engine. A convincing box does not certify authenticity. [DENSO pre-check] [DENSO counterfeits]

If anything is doubtful, retain the packaging, batch details and invoice, and ask the manufacturer or an authorized distributor before installation. Read Tip 09: identifying warning signs of counterfeit spark plugs.

Technical checklist before installation

  1. Vehicle identity: VIN, year, engine, market, production date and modifications.
  2. Part number: current OEM reference, documented supersessions and exact manufacturer-catalog application.
  3. Specification: heat range, materials, resistance, terminal and geometry. Heat-range numbers from different brands do not share a universal scale.
  4. Dimensions: thread diameter and pitch, reach, seat and gap according to applicable documentation. Do not force fine-wire electrodes.
  5. Authenticity: traceable supplier, invoice, batch, markings and insulator/electrode condition. Visual inspection is a screening step, not certification.
  6. Installation: application-specific torque, engine condition and procedure. Do not use a universal torque or change thread lubrication without the manufacturer's instruction.
  7. Verification: when addressing a fault, record DTCs, misfire counters and operating conditions before/after. Persistent misfires require ignition, fueling and mechanical diagnosis.

Americopp technical conclusion

NGK or DENSO manufacturer packaging may reduce cost when application and origin are confirmed. Genuine parts may be appropriate for OEM revisions, documentation, traceability or warranty terms. Decide using the part number, catalog and total cost. Never sacrifice specification or authenticity for a lower price.
